The story (no spoilers)

Anne Shirley, eighteen and newly grown, leaves Green Gables and Avonlea for the first time to study at Redmond College in Kingsport, Nova Scotia. Parting from home, from Marilla, from the mischievous twins Davy and Dora, and from her dearest friend Diana, who is already settling into a life of her own, feels like losing a piece of herself. In the city, Anne shares an old cottage called Patty's Place with her friends Priscilla and Stella, and with the formidable Aunt Jamesina, and soon finds her days crowded with lectures, new companions, and a stubborn black cat who refuses to be ignored. Yet the old friendship with Gilbert Blythe has begun to feel strangely unsteady, and more than one admirer hopes to win her. Anne has always imagined exactly the sort of hero she will love, and as proposals arrive she must discover whether her dreams match what her heart truly wants.
