The story (no spoilers)
The Persian, a figure known to every subscriber at the Paris Opera, comes forward to swear that the ghost haunting the great theatre is a man of flesh and blood. Thirty years ago, strange events shake the Opera House: a voice sounds from empty walls, a private box stays forever reserved, and the new managers, Richard and Moncharmin, laugh off the warnings of their staff and the ballet girls' terrified whispers. Then the young Swedish soprano Christine Daae rises to sudden fame, taught by a voice no one else can see. Her childhood friend Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny, returns to find her changed, and falls in love with her afresh. As the ghost's demands grow more insistent and the cellars, the lake and the hidden passages beneath the stage start to claim their victims, the Persian sets out the truth in his own words. What lives below the Opera, and what does it want with Christine?
The cast
24 speaking roles are listed; walk-on parts are not. Each voice was designed, or chosen from our library of designed voices, to fit how the book describes the character, and it stays with them from the first chapter to the last. Portraits are illustrated impressions of each character.

She has a Parisian working-class accent, in a low, slightly raspy contralto. She speaks firmly and deliberately, with bursts of indignation. Dignified, proud, devoted and quick to take offence when doubted.
